Pain is a sensation with which we are all too familiar with in this world. The Doctor knew pain better than anyone else. When he told you about himself, you felt his pain. Everyone he knew and loved were gone, and he could never see them again.

There was a whole thirty minutes left for the Doctor to figure out how to reactivate the shields. He discovered, unfortunately, that one engine is also out meaning the ship cannot maneuver out of harm's way. He spent twenty minutes tracing the virus and trying to calm people down. He learned the name of the guard, Alex, after bumping into him and making the gun go off, luckily hitting a wall.
